Microsoft Teams - How To Join a Teams Group as a Guest User

The following document outlines how to join a Teams team as a guest user, from email receival to sign-in.

1. Accessing Your Invitation

  1. Log in to your email and select the invitation email
  2. Choose Open Microsoft Teams


The following steps will differ depending on if you have a Microsoft account registered to your email from either previous invitations, or just from using other Microsoft services with your email address.  This does not need to be a Microsoft-based email (such as @hotmail or @Live.  This can be a Gmail account, as an example).  Please head to the section that is most relevant for you.


2a. Joining When You Don't Have An Associated Microsoft Account

  1. The next screen will ask you to create a Microsoft account using your email.  Click Next
  2. Create a password for your account and click Next

  3. You will now receive a verification email with a code.  Open that email
  4. Take note of the security code and enter it where required at the Microsoft login
  5. Do the anti-bot test.  

  6. Click No when asked if you would like to stay signed in.  This increases the security of your account. 
  7. Select Accept.  Once complete, go to step 3


2b. Joining When You Already Have An Associated Microsoft Account

  1. At the login screen, enter your Microsoft account password 


    If you have forgotten your password, select "Forgot password?" and follow the prompts to reset it

  2. Click No when asked if you would like to stay signed in.  This increases the security of your account. Once complete go to step 3

  3. Select Accept.  Once complete, go to step 3


3. Installing and Logging Into Microsoft Teams for The First Time

For the best experience, we recommend users install the Microsoft Teams client.  

  1. At the next screen, select Download the Windows App
  2. Run the Teams Installer once it has completed downloading


  3. Now, enter the same Microsoft account you signed in with on the web browser and click Sign in
  4. Enter your password and click Sign in
  5. Congratulations, you are now on Teams!


4. Opening Microsoft Teams Invites After Having Already Installed

Okay, so previously went through the sign in process and have installed Microsoft Teams.  Great!  Now, how do you open it from an email or other received link?  

  1. Open the email or message with the link and select it as you normally would
  2. You will see a pop-up in your browser.  Select Open.  For convenience, you can also check the Always allow box to avoid this pop-up in the future.  Microsoft Teams will now open and take you to your meeting/team!
