MFA - Phone Upgrade

Upgrading to a new device will interrupt your use of multi-factor authentication services. This may impact your access to College accounts and resources or other services you’ve enable to use the MFA feature. To ensure minimal downtime, please follow the below instructions to migrate your authenticator to a new phone.

Please note we have now enabled SMS (text message) authentication for our environment. You can view the setup process for this here:

This will help you to avoid access interruptions in the event you lose or upgrade your phone.

Note: You will need to have possession of both phones to do this. If you have already upgraded and do not have your old phone, please contact IT Service Desk for assistance with re-registration. You may need to contact support for any other accounts you registered for MFA on the old device.

Microsoft Authenticator Instructions:

  1. Turn on the backup feature (Old device):

    1. Open Microsoft Authenticator. Tap the three vertical dots at the top right, and then tap “Settings.”

    2. In the “Backup” section, toggle-On “Cloud Backup” on an Android phone, or “iCloud Backup” on an iPhone.

    3. Your accounts will then be backed up to the Microsoft account you used when you first set up Microsoft Authenticator. iPhones also require that you have an iCloud account.

  2. Recover accounts (New device):

    1. To use the Recovery tool, open Microsoft Authenticator on your new phone, and then click “Begin Recovery.”

    2. You’ll be asked to sign in to the Microsoft account you used for the backup on your old phone. Your accounts will then automatically be added to Microsoft Authenticator on your new one.

Some accounts will require you to revalidate, either by signing in to those accounts or scanning a QR code. Microsoft Authenticator will display a message if you need to do this.

Note: We will need to re-enable MFA for your Lambton account. Please contact the IT Service Desk to do this for you.

After backing up, remove the accounts from your old phone. Don’t do this until you’ve tested and made sure you can access these accounts on your new phone via Microsoft Authenticator.

  1. Remove an account:

    1. Open Microsoft Authenticator on it. Tap the account you want to remove, and then tap “Remove Account.”
