Delete D2L Grade Items from Gradebook (Non-Associated vs Associated)
Faculty may want to delete grade items from their D2L gradebook to keep it organized and ensure that only relevant assessments are included in the final grade calculation. Deleting obsolete or unnecessary grade items, such as those linked to canceled assignments or outdated activities, helps avoid confusion and ensures accuracy in grading. Associated grade items are linked to specific activities, such as a dropbox or a quiz. Non-associated grade items, on the other hand, are standalone entries not linked to any activity (e.g., manual input grades) and can be deleted without impacting other course content.
First thing to check….go to Grades > Manage Grade > look at the column that says “Association” and see if there is anything listed beside the grade item you want to delete. This will let you know if your grade item is associated or non-associated.
Instructions to Delete a Non-associated Grade Item
From within your course:
Click Grades
Click Manage Grades
Click More Actions
Click Delete
Select the grade item
Click Delete (x2)
Instructions to Delete an Associated Grade Item
If the grade item is associated with an assessment tool, you will need to go to that assessment tool and remove the association to the gradebook. For example, if it is associated with a quiz, you would:
Click Assessments
Click Quizzes
Click on the associated quiz
Click “In Grade Book”
Click “Not in Gradebook”
Click Save and Close
Next you will click Grades
Click Manage Grades
Click More Actions
Click Delete
Select the grade item
Click Delete (x2)
If you attempt to delete a grade item and it won’t allow you to select it, you likely need to remove the association.
