Creating a "Grade To Date" Column in D2L Grades

Adding a Grade to Date column in D2L allows faculty to provide students with real-time visibility into their current standing in the course. This column displays the cumulative grade based on completed assignments, quizzes, and other graded activities, helping students track their progress throughout the semester. By having access to this information, students can identify areas for improvement, manage their study time more effectively, and reduce anxiety about their performance. It also encourages transparency and communication between faculty and students, as both parties can easily review and discuss the student’s current grade, ensuring alignment on expectations and any necessary adjustments before the final grade is assigned.

 Instructions

From within your D2L course:

  1. Click Grades

  2. Click Manage Grades

  3. Click New

  4. Click Item

  5. Choose Calculated

  6. Enter Name of item “Grade2Date”

  7. Set Grade Scheme (e.g. Lambton Grade Scheme, Percentage etc.)

  8. Check the box to select all Grade Items (warning – if you have “treat all ungraded items as zero” enabled, Grade2Date will use the zero to calculate the overall grade)

  9. Choose Milestone Grade Calculation or Final Grade Calculation

  10. Save and Close

It is important to remember that Grade2Date will NOT factor in a lowest dropped grade.

The new Grade2Date column will be added at the bottom of your gradebook, I would recommend moving it to the top. Click More Actions > Reorder > scroll to the bottom and change GradeToDate to “1”> Save
