D2L Quiz Settings for Academic Integrity
Password: If you are proctoring the test from on-campus, require your students to enter a password to access the test. This will help to prevent students from accessing the test from remote locations. The password is found in the “Availability Dates & Conditions” section of the test settings.
IP Restriction: This setting will require students to be on campus, on an Ethernet connected computer to complete their test. The setting won’t restrict the student to a specific room or computer lab, but it will prevent them from accessing the test from a Wi-Fi signal or an off-campus computer. The IP Restrictions setting is found in the “Availability Dates & Conditions” section of the test settings. See the IP Start and End range settings in the image below.
Time Limit: A general practice is to allow 1 minute per question for multiple choice questions when determining the time required to complete the test. Of course, this is a general guideline and may need to be adjusted if the test requires the student to complete calculations or respond to written response (essay) type questions.
Question Pools: Incorporate question pools into your quizzes to distribute unique sets of questions to users. This will prevent students from sharing answers. To setup Question Pools, you will need to either create or import your questions in the Question Library (recommended to organize your questions into sections/folders). Next, you will create a Quiz (Assessments > Quizzes > New Quiz). Enter the title of the quiz. Click on “Create New” > “Question Pool” > Enter a title for your question pool > click “Browse Question Library” > Select the questions (or section) that you want to include in your pool > “Import” > enter the # of question to select from your pool of questions.
Shuffle Questions and Sections: In the Timing & Display settings area, select “Shuffle questions and sections within the quiz”. This will randomize the order of questions and sections for each student. If combined with the paging setting, this can make it more difficult for students to compare test questions during testing.
Paging: The “Paging” option in D2L quiz settings allows you to control how many questions are displayed on each page of the quiz. This can be useful for customizing the quiz experience and reducing the risk of cheating. The “Paging” option is in the Timing & Display section.
You can choose from several options, including:
All questions displayed together: All questions will be displayed on a single page.
One question per page: Each question will be displayed on a separate page.
Five questions per page: This will display 5 questions per page in your quiz, regardless of sections in your quiz.
Ten questions per page: This will display 10 questions per page in your quiz, regardless of sections in your quiz.
Add page break after each section: This setting allows you to break up your quiz into multiple pages. This is useful when you want to present questions to a learner, but also organize questions conceptually by theme or parent topic.
Prevent Going Back to Previous Pages: This feature in D2L quizzes is an option that restricts students’ ability to review a test or quiz in its entirety or revise an answer on a question once it has passed. This feature can help prevent cheating by reducing the opportunity for students to go back and change their answers or review the entire quiz. To use this setting, the Paging must be set to anything other than “All Questions Displayed Together”.
Disable Email, Instant Messages and Alerts: This setting will prevent students from communicating with others during the quiz within the D2L environment. On the Timing & Display settings page, select Disable Email, Instant Messages and alerts.
LockDown Browser: The LockDown Browser is a custom browser that deters cheating by locking down the Quizzes tool in Brightspace. Locking down quizzes prevents learners from visiting other websites, accessing other applications, capturing screen content, and printing content displayed by the browser. To activate LockDown Browser click Assessments > Quizzes > LockDown Browser tab > click the drop-down menu beside your test > click Settings.
Click “Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this exam” > enter a Password (if desired) > click “Advanced Settings” > typically faculty will uncheck the first box (“Require LDB to view post-exam feedback and results”) > check the 3rd box “Allow students to take this exam with an iPad” > Save and Close. (Important: We are not allowed to use the Proctoring portion of the Lockdown Browser without prior permission from your Dean).
Verify Test Submissions During a Test: To ensure that your students have submitted their test before leaving the classroom, instructors can verify this within the D2L settings area. During the test, faculty can click “Assessment” > “Quizzes” > click the drop-down arrow beside their test and click “Grade”. Next click on “Show Search Options > under the “Restrict to” area, the default setting is to display “Users who have completed an attempt” (so you shouldn’t have to change anything). Students that have submitted a test will be listed at the bottom area of the page. You may need to refresh your browser to update the list as students continue to submit their tests.
