Responsibilities of the

College

  1. To provide academic preparation for students entering field placement.

  2. To provide guidelines to the field placement and the student for the field placement.

  3. To promote field placement opportunities in the community.

  4. To assist in the placement of suitable candidates for placement.

  5. To assign a College Faculty Field Co-ordinator to the placement.

  6. Act as an advisor for both the student and the Agency/Service Field Supervisor in disputes and assist the student in compliance with College procedures.

  7. To take ultimate responsibility for grading of the student.

Placement Faculty Facilitator

The College Faculty Field Co-ordinator Coordinator is the link between Lambton College and the field placement Agency/Service. The College Faculty Field Co-ordinator Coordinator will:

  1. Review student information as provided by the College Field Placement Liaison.

  2. Meet with student(s) prior to field placement by phone, e-mail or in-person to discuss expectations.

  3. Provide course outlines, handbooks and any other relevant documentation to the student and the Agency/Service in advance of the field placement.

  4. Conduct on-going meetings by phone or e-mail as required. Provide grade input and feedback to the student upon completion of placement.

  5. Ensure that the Agency/Service has liaised with the College Field Placement Liaison in the case of any incident/injury involving a student.

  6. Communicate with the Agency/Service staff member and student, so that concerns/problems can be identified early enough to allow development and implementation of remedial assistance.

  7. Act upon academic and performance concerns identified by the student and/or the Agency/Service staff member by escalating to the Co-ordinator, Online Education.

  8. Monitor those students who are having difficulty at mid-point and those who fail field placement and record and file reasons for failure.

  9. Complete the final Student Field Placement Record with each student. The Progress Record containing documentation from the Agency/Service staff member and from the student, as well as her/his own observation, is used as a basis for discussion of the student’s final evaluation for that placement. Final determination of performance level is the responsibility of the assigned College Faculty Field Co-ordinator.

  10. Student Progress Record: The College Faculty Field Co-ordinator’s professional judgment prevails in any situation where there is a disagreement with how the Progress Record was completed by the student or Agency/Service staff member. Grades are assigned by the College Faculty Field Co-ordinator in conjunction with the College.

  11. Work with the Agency/Service staff member in the development of strategies for supervision of students and implementing any remedial assistance for specific students as required.

Responsibilities of the

College Placement Liaison

The College Field Placement Liaison, Laurie Grant, is the link between Lambton College and the
field placement. Responsibilities include:

  1. Facilitate the placement affiliation agreement.

  2. Ensure that any accident injury reporting occurring on the Agency/Service site is reported to the College.

  3. Ensure all “Passport to Placement” documentation has been received and is in order.

  4. Consult with the College Faculty Field Co-ordinator regarding the possible applicants.

  5. Communicate with the Agency/Service regarding students they have agreed to take on for a placement.

  6. Communicate with students regarding confirmation of their acceptance of field placement with the Agency/Service.

  7. Confirm placement arrangements with the Agency/Service and the student.

Student

This includes the policies for grievance procedures related to both academic and non-academic matters.

  1. Attending field placement while under the influence of alcohol or drugs that impede
    judgment and/or reaction time. (Note: if you are required to take prescription drugs that
    interfere with your work abilities, it is your responsibility to alert your Agency/Service
    Field Supervisor and your College Field Co-ordinator).

  2. Falling asleep while on field placement.

  3. Breaking confidentiality by unauthorized discussion while on or off the company site.

  4. Forging signatures on any field placement documents.

  5. Failing to implement Agency/Service routines/policies.

Agency/Service

Note: Should there be a serious issue or emergency affecting the student in the placement,
please contact your College Faculty Field Co-ordinator. If you are unable to reach them, please
contact the College Field Placement Liaison.

  1. Students must complete the requirements for a “Passport to Placement” prior to beginning their field placement.

  2. Agency/Service Field Supervisors are reminded that the College cannot check police records of students. Students are aware that field placements will request this documentation for review.

Responsibilities of the

Agency/Service - Field Supervisor

  1. To accept the responsibility for supervising an Emergency Communications student.

  2. To develop an orientation program for the student.

  3. Provide on-going feedback to the student about their performance.

  4. Include the student as a responsible member of the staff team.

  5. Document any student concerns, record action taken and notify the assigned College Faculty Field Co-ordinator to assist in the resolution of the issues.

  6. The company’s staff member is given full support by the College Faculty Field Co-ordinator to send off-duty any student who is not prepared to function effectively.

  7. Notify the College Faculty Field Co-ordinator in the event that the student does not complete all makeup hours/days as required by Lambton College.

  8. Meet with the student to provide program information and complete required forms.

  9. The Agency/Service staff member will role model competencies for students, which the student in turn must demonstrate during field placement.

  10. To familiarize the student with the Agency/Service policies and procedures.

  11. To ensure that the student has the opportunity to learn appropriate skills.

  12. To ensure that a student is not left alone for an extended period of time. Students cannot be used as replacement for a staff person due to liability concerns.

  13. To provide regular supervision.

  14. To keep informed of the student’s progress.

  15. To sign off of the Student Placement Log (Appendix “F”) and on the Competencies and Tasks Journal (Appendix “G”).

  16. To provide two written evaluations: one at mid-placement and the other at the end of the placement.

  17. Performance evaluations are based on observations and/or staff input. They are prepared and then reviewed with the student and the Agency/Service Field Supervisor.

  18. To inform the College Faculty Field Co-ordinator immediately of any difficulties encountered with the student, such as inappropriate placement, breach of ethics, lack of ability or suitability for specific placement, frequent absence or injury. Written documentation will be required.

  19. To maintain contact with the College Faculty Field Co-ordinator.

  20. To recommend a satisfactory or unsatisfactory grade at the end of the field placement.
